Traditional Joinery Specialists
Wantage, Oxfordshire

Quality “Old Style” workmanship in a modern time

We are a small family business situated in the historic town of Wantage in South Oxfordshire. Since 1980 when we started business as ‘Unique Kitchens’ we had been making kitchens, bathrooms and furniture for many clients who are still using us to this day.

Throughout those years we were often asked to take on more specialist projects such as roof restorations and lime mortaring for listed and period buildings. It was from then that we decided to concentrate on our specialism and passion for traditional, historical craftsmanship.

We offer a complete joinery and structural timber service along with Heritage Building Renovations.

With us there is seldom need to hire other contractors as we can handle many fields of trade.

Ye Olde Woodworkery is an approved Accoya wood manufacturer. Accoya wood has an incredibly low carbon footprint and a 25 – 50 year warranty, making it a better choice for our environment.

Contact us for advice on how we can help you and provide a quality Joinery and building renovation service.

A carpentry, construction and building service based in South Oxfordshire. Over the last 4 decades we have probably created a kitchen, built some furniture, renovated a building, laid a patio or built a conservatory on every town and village within 40 miles of our base.

We can cite examples of our work in Wantage, Faringdon, Abingdon, Didcot, Wallingford, Henley and Oxford, as well as all the villages in between those towns.

Heritage Restoration

Often you need repairs to a rotten or damaged structure which requires matching or replacing something that already exists; this usually requires great care and detailed knowledge of the original construction which, unlike us, most contractors are unfamiliar with. For examples of some of this type of work see our Heritage page.

Read below what people have said about us…

We can thoroughly recommend Troy and his team of skilled craftsmen for almost any work regarding listed buildings. We have a 2* listed farmhouse and thatched barns for which Ye Olde Woodworkery custom made 5 pairs of enormous bespoke wooden doors, repaired the cladding;  re roofed the slates on the Victorian pantry, replaced rotted windows and other minor jobs. Their skill with old buildings is to be admired and nothing is too much trouble.

Mrs D AmesburyRowbury Farm

If you are looking for a dedicated and highly skilled carpenter Troy Thomas is your man.

He has worked for me on various projects for over 25 years.

He is a top quality craftsman and has always produced work of a very high standard.

Mrs V TennentHarwell

I initially engaged Ye Olde Woodworkery to carry out some re plastering and minor repairs to the wooden floors in my 17h Century listed cottage. But the water damage proved much more serious than anticipated, and involved major structural repairs that required permission from the listed building authority, and the use of specialised materials.. Troy’s experience in this type of work was invaluable, and guided me through my application, advising me on materials and period style.

At the end of each day, they cleared up and left the house as tidy as possible, and I was kept informed of what was happening at all times. I was very pleased with the finished project ,and asked Troy back to lay my new hearth. All works passed inspection from the listed building officer, and have received many compliments.

Mrs W CliftonTruelocks Farm

Dear Troy,

I just wanted to congratulate you on the excellent job you did on the semi circular door.

It looks great!

Mrs R WilliamsonMoors House

Thank you for all your beautiful wood work, such a talented crew!!

Mrs D AmesburyRowbury Farm

Having run my own business as a master Thatcher for 35 years we have always used Troy at Ye Olde Woodworkery for all of our work on listed buildings.

Over the years we have worked on many projects all over Oxfordshire from small repairs to porches and complete re-roofs.  All of Troy’s work has been to the highest of standards and importantly sympathetically done to the character of the historically important buildings we work on.

I have also recommended Troy to many of my clients who have employed him for many jobs on their properties including new handmade windows, lead work, lime plastering etc and finally I even used Troy to renovate my own house where he did all the work on a complete refurb. In summary I would highly recommend Troy for any projects you are looking to do on your property.

Great Company & Great Staff! I Couldn’t Recommend this Company enough 10 out of 10 Ye Olde Woodworkery.

Quite simply the only place to go for bespoke joinery.

Troy (Ye Olde Woodworkery) made me a wooden beam and framework of the exact specifications the Army Selection Centre used so I could practice pull ups before joining up. 17 years later that beam is still as good as the day it was made! First choose for quality and professional service!
